What a great day we enjoyed at Swan Lake. We learned how local plants and animals have adapted to survive in their habitats.

Students in grade 4 are becoming more and more familiar with using criteria to create and effectively assess their own work. Throughout the assignment, students are encouraged to reflect back on class-generated criteria. Upon completion of the mapping project, students conferenced with a partner to get feedback and assess their own work. The learning and diaogue was rich and meaningful for students; sharing thoughtful suggestions between one another. As part of our habitat unit of inquiry, students have been exploring where different animals live in the world based on what they need to survive. They have been using their knowledge of maps to create their own distribution maps to show the range of their chosen animals. Students have been using a variety of resources to research and learn. What tools do you like to use to explore the world? atlases, maps, google earth, google maps...It was a great experience to see our work published into a book which we will keep forever. With the 4H class, we celebrated our book launch by toasting each other and our 'editor' Ms. Rachel Boult. We also enjoyed 'mingling' with one another and talking about what it feels like to be a published author. Our final book respresents so many steps in our learning about animals, their habitats and adaptations and the process of publishing. On what turned out to be a beautiful day late in November, both Grade 4 classes headed to Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary to discover more about Wetland habitats. The students and parent volunteers engaged in three different activities. The first was a wetland walk where they learned about the plants and animals that live in the Swan Lake wetland. The second activity involved dip netting, observing and identifying living organisms from the lake. Finally the students explored the nature house and learned about local species and their adaptations. Meeting the turtle and the snake was a big highlight for the students.
The students in 4J are each allocated a week in the school year where they are celebrated individually. Students of the week will share special memories and sometimes important items or artwork with the rest of their classmates. As individuals we recognize different virtues that we think represent our students of the week. |
